Subtraction of Mixed Fraction

Subtraction (Same Denominator) / Like Fractions Subtraction (Different Denominators) / Unlike Fractions Subtraction (Whole Number and Fraction) Subtraction(Mixed Fraction)

Subtraction of Mixed Fractions can be done by two separate methods :

Method 1 = Conversion of Mixed Fraction into Improper Fraction.
Method 2 = Subtraction of Whole Numbers and Fractions separately.

For Example : Solve : 2 2
5
  -   1 1
5

Method 1 = Conversion of Mixed Fraction into Improper Fraction. ( How to convert mixed fraction to improper fraction ? )

2 2
5
= 12
5

1 1
5
= 6
5

Now, subtract the improper fraction and we get:

12
5
- 6
5

Here, the denominators of both the fractions are same, so we apply -- Subtraction of Fraction with Same Denominator

12 - 6
5
= 6
5

Now, you can also convert the Improper Fraction into Mixed Fraction ( How to convert improper fraction to mixed fraction ? )

6
5
= 1 1
5

Method 2 = Subtraction of Whole Numbers and Fractions separately.
Subtraction of Whole Numbers = 2 - 1 = 1
Subtraction of Fractions = (2/5) - (1/5)

Here, the denominators of both the fractions are same, so we apply -- Subtraction of Fraction with Same Denominator

(2-1)
5
= 1
5

Now, Add Whole Number and Fraction and we get:

1 + 1
5

1
1
+ 1
5
(because 1 = 1/1)

{(1 × 5) + (1 × 1) }
5

{5 + 1}
5
= 6
5

Now, you can also convert the Improper Fraction into Mixed Fraction ( How to convert improper fraction to mixed fraction ? )

6
5
= 1 1
5
