Subtraction of Like Decimals

Addition of Like Decimals Subtraction of Like Decimals

Before you learn how to subtract like decimals, You must know:

What are Like Decimals ?
What is a Decimal Point ?
How to Find Place Values of Digits in Decimal ?

Learn subtraction of like decimals in the following steps:

  • Step 1: Write minuend and subtrahend in such a way that decimal point and digit of same place values should be at same vertical order or same place value
  • Step 2: Do the subtraction as in case of whole numbers
  • Step 3: Decimal Point of given decimals and answer should be at same vertical order or at same place.

    Example - Subtract 2.7 from 9.8
Solution: Steps for subtraction are as follows:

Step 1: Write minuend and subtrahend in such a way that decimal point and digit of same place values should be at same vertical order or same place value and we get
    9.8
    2.7

Step 2: Do the subtraction as in case of whole numbers and we get:

    9.8
    2.7

    7 1

Subtraction of Digits at tenths place and we get: 8 - 7 = 1
1 is written in the sum at same place value.

Subtraction of Digits at ones place and we get: 9 - 2 = 7
7 is written in the sum at same place value.

Step 3: Decimal Point of given decimals and answer should be at same vertical order or at same place.

    9.8
    2.7

    7.1

Hence on Subtracting 2.7 from 9.8 we get decimal 7.1
