Power of Variable

Coefficient Of Variable Power of Variable Multiplication of Variables

Before you study this concept, you are advice to read:

What are Exponents ?
What are the Laws of Exponents ?

As you have studied earlier in topic Exponents that:
108 means 10 is base and 8 is called power or exponent of number 10

Similarly, in algebra:
a5 means that a is variable and 5 is the power of variable a
This also means that variable (a) is multiplied five times by itself.

And algebraic number 'x' has 1 as its power.
Or we can say that x1 = x
This means that when a variable has 1 as its power, its power is ignored and only variable is written as such.

Also, power of variable is also similar to what you studied in various laws of exponents like am X an = am+n or am an = am-n or am X bm = (ab)m et...

Example 1: In algebraic expression: x10
x is a variable and 10 is the power of variable x

Observe the following picture:

Example 2: In algebraic expression :2x + 3p4 - 10y5
x, p and y are variable of given algebraic expression having 1, 4 and 5 as their respective powers.
Observe the following picture:
