Before you learn How to Compare decimals, You must know:

What is place Value of Digits in Decimal ?

For comparing and ordering decimals, follow the below steps:

  • Step 1: Compare the Whole Number Part of the decimals. The Decimal with larger whole numbers part is greater.

  • Step 2: If Whole Number Part of the decimals are same, compare the Digit at Tenths Place. The Decimal with larger digit at tenths place is greater.

  • Step 3: If both Whole Number Part and Digit at Tenths place of the decimals are same, compare the Digit at Hundredths Place. The Decimal with larger digit at hundredths place is greater.

  • Step 4: If Whole Number Part, Digit at Tenths place and Hundredths Place of the decimals are also same, compare the Digit at Thousandths Place. The Decimal with larger digit at thousandths place is greater.

Repeat the steps till you won't find the comparison

    Example 1: Compare 12.24 and 19.10

Solution: Given decimals are 12.24 and 19.10:

Firstly, find the Whole Number Part of given decimals and we get:

Whole Numbers Part in 12.24 is 12
Whole Numbers Part in 19.10 is 19

Now, on comparing the Whole Number Part, we get:
    19 is greater than 12

Since, decimal with larger whole numbers part is greater.

Hence, decimal 19.10 is greater than decimal 12.24

    Example 2: Compare 76.82 and 76.28

Solution: Given decimals are 76.82 and 76.28:

Firstly, find the Whole Number Part of given decimals and we get:

Whole Numbers Part in 76.82 is 76
Whole Numbers Part in 76.28 is 76

Since the Whole Number Part of both the decimals are same, so we will find and compare digit at tenths place.

Now, find the digit at tenths place of given decimals and we get:

Tenths digit in 76.82 is 8
Tenths digit in 76.28 is 2

And on comparing the digit at tenths place, we get:
    8 is greater than 2

Since, decimal with larger digit at tenths place is greater.

Hence, decimal 76.82 is greater than decimal 76.28.
