Before you study how to convert proper fraction into decimal, you are advised to read

What is Proper Fraction ?

In order to convert a proper fraction into decimal, divide numerator by denominator in long division method.
Example - Convert 2
3
into decimal

In the given fraction we have:
Numerator = 2
Denominator = 5

Steps of converting fraction into decimal in long division method are as follows:

Step 1: Dividend = Numerator = 2
Divisor = Denominator = 5

Place divisor and dividend as shown below:

Step 2: As divisor (5) is greater than dividend 2, so we will write Zero in the quotient, as shown below:

Step 3: Place decimal point after 2 in dividend and after Zero in quotient, as shown below:

Step 4: Now, in dividend write Zero next to decimal point, as shown below:
(Note: we can write as many zero as are required to complete the division)

Step 5: As dividend is 20 (ignore decimal point), so we can divide it by divisor (5).
We know that 20 is the multiple of 5 and on dividing 20 by 5 we get 4.
So, we write 20 in the dividend column and 4 in quotient after decimal point; as shown below:

Step 6: In the last, we get remainder as Zero (as shown below); so long division method also ends here.

Hence, fraction 2
3
is equal to decimal 0.4
