Addition of a Positive Integer and a Negative Integer

Addition of Positive Integers Addition of Negative Integers Addition ( Positive & Negative Integer)

Add one positive and one negative integer

Steps of addition of a positive and a negative integer:
Step 1: Subtract smaller integer from bigger integer
Step 2: Obtained integer will have the sign of bigger integer.

Example 1 = Add (10) and (-5)
Answer = Write given integers in addition expression and we get:
(10) + (-5)

Subtract smaller integer(-5) from bigger integer(10) and we get;
= 10 - 5 = 5

Since, the bigger integer(10) is a positive integer, so we get:
= +5 or = 5

Hence, (10) + (-5) = 5

Example 2 = Add (6) and (-20)
Answer = Write given integers in addition expression and we get:
(6) + (-20)

Subtract smaller integer(6) from bigger integer(-20) and we get;
= 20 - 6 = 14

Since, the bigger integer(-20) is a negative integer, so we get
= (-14)

Hence, (6) + (-20) = (-14)

Example 3 = Add (-90) and (82)
Answer = Write given integers in addition expression and we get:
(-90) + (82)

Subtract smaller integer(82) from bigger integer(-90) and we get;
= 90 - 82 = 8

Since, the bigger integer(-90) is a negative integer, so we get
= (-8)

Hence, (-90) + (82) = (-8)

Addition more than one negative and positive integer

Steps of addition here are as follows:
Step 1: Arrange the given integers in group of positive and negative integers:
Step 2: Add positive integers and negative integers separately
Step 3: Subtract smaller integer from bigger integer
Step 4: Obtained integer will have the sign of bigger integer.

Example 4: Add the following integers:
20, (-3), 15, (-10)

Solution: Given integers are:
20, (-3), 15, (-10)

Add the given integers and we get:
(20) + (-3) + (15) + (-10)

Here, you can see that there are two positive integers and two negative integers, so we rearrange them, as shown below:
(20) + (15) + (-3) + (-10)

Add positive integers and negative integers separately and we get:
(35) + (-13)

You can observe that now we have one positive integers and one negative integer, so we will solve them as we learnt above in example 1, 2 and 3 i.e.:
Subtract the smaller integer from the bigger integer (ignore the negative sign) and we get:
= 22

Since the bigger integer is a positive integer i.e. 35, so we add positive sign and get:
= +22

Or this can be written as:
= 22

Hence, (20) + (-3) + (15) + (-10) = 22
