Addition of Mixed Fractions

Addition (Same Denominators) / Like Fractions Addition (Different Denominators) / Unlike Fractions Addition (Whole Number and Fraction) Addition (Mixed Fractions)

Before you study addition of mixed fractions, you are advised to read

How to convert mixed fraction to improper fraction ?
How to add fractions of same denominators ?

Addition of Mixed Fractions can be done by two separate methods :

Method 1 = Conversion of Mixed Fraction into Improper Fraction.
Method 2 = Addition of Whole Numbers and Fractions separately.

Method 1 = Conversion of Mixed Fraction into Improper Fraction.

Lets add the below two mixed fractions by using method 1

1 2
5
+ 1 4
5

First, convert both these fractions into improper fractions and we get

7
5
+ 9
5

Now, add the improper fraction and we get:

7 + 9
5
= 16
5

Now, convert the improper fraction into mixed fraction

16
5
= 3 1
5

Method 2 = Addition of Whole Numbers and Fractions separately.

Lets add the below two mixed fractions by using method 2

1 2
5
+ 1 4
5

Add Whole Numbers and we get = 1 + 1 = 2

Now add fractions

2
5
+ 4
5

Here, the denominators of both the fractions are same, so we apply -- Addition of Fraction with Same Denominator { How to add fractions of same denominators ? }

2 + 4
5
= 6
5

Now, Add Whole Number and Fraction and we get: (Topic available above)

2 + 6
5
or we can also write it as 2
1
+ 6
5

{(2 × 5) + (6 × 1) }
5

{10 + 6}
5
= 16
5

Now, convert the improper fraction into mixed fraction

16
5
= 3 1
5
