Addition - Like Fractions or with Same Denominators

Addition (Same Denominators) / Like Fractions Addition (Different Denominators) / Unlike Fractions Addition (Whole Number and Fraction) Addition (Mixed Fractions)

Before you understand how to add like fractions you are advised to read

What are Like Fractions ?

When we have to add fractions with same denominators or to add like fractions, we simply add the numerators and denominator remains same. e.g.

2
3
+ 5
3

In the given example the denominators of both the fraction are same i.e. 3, so we add the numerator and we get:

2 + 5
3
= 7
3

Following are some more examples of Addition of Fractions with Same Denominator or Addition of Like Fractions.

Example 1 : Add the below given fractions

1
10
+ 5
10

Answer = In the given fractions the denominators are same, so add the numerators and denominator remains same and we get:

1 + 5
10
= 6
10

Divide both numerator denominator by 2, to convert it into lowest form and we get:

3
5

Example 2 : Add the below given fractions

10
3
+ 22
3

Answer = Given fractions are like fractions, so add the numerators and denominator remains same and we get:

10 + 22
3
= 32
3

Example 3 : Add the below fractions

2
101
+ 4
101

Answer = In the given fractions the denominators are same, so add the numerators and denominator remains same and we get:

2 + 4
101
= 6
101

Example 4 : Add the below fractions

25
39
+ 40
39

Answer = Given fractions are like fractions, so add the numerators and denominator remains same and we get:

25 + 40
39
= 65
39
